The Piedmont region of Virginia is one of great beauty and one of the most acclaimed artists preserving the region through works of art is Tom Neel. For well over 25 years this self taught artist has created his paintings, becoming one of the area’s most commissioned and best known landscape painters. His work can be found in private and corporate collections extensively here, nationally from coast to coast and in many parts of Europe. It is rare for a collector to have just one of his paintings and nearly half of the paintings Neel creates, are done as a special order - commissioned work of art.

While Tom Neel paints other places and other things, mostly in oil, some in acrylic, this area is home and his rich oil paintings show his emotion and passion for this area like no other. Neel is not one to do the same thing over and over again. To see a body of his work, is to truly see wide artistic diversity and vision - be it an intimate look at spring or the intensity of a humid summer day. Low morning fog across a meadow or the most dramatic sunsets and varied blues the blue ridge mountains give us, are where he brings the viewer’s senses. Neel wants to do more than just have you see what he sees, he wants you to experience it in a way you may never have thought you could.

Neel is not an award seeker, choosing rather to be judged only by those who covet his art. Nick Arundel, founder of Great Meadow, co founder of the Piedmont Environmental Council and Friends of the National Zoo has said “he is one of the most important artists we have”. Patrick O’Connell, owner and chef of The inn At Little Washington, who commissions Tom Neel for his creative services with great regularity, said of “Onward and Upward”, the 30th anniversary painting Neel created for him, “It is the perfect visual image!”, and Richard Clarke, on air counter-terrorism consultant for ABC news, simply said of his commissioned painting by Neel, “You nailed it!”

Tom Neel is a long standing judge of The Congressional Art Show which helps high school students in creative excellence. He is also published poet and writer seen mostly in The Middleburg Eccentric. There have been many articles featuring Tom Neel and his paintings such as The Piedmont Virginian, Elan Magazine, Home & Design and more.
